The cobblestone wall built in the early 20th century for the Edward and Jennie Bechtoldt farm still stands along Route 3 in Saranac. The pergola supported vines (perhaps hops) that also provided shade below. Forty acres of the 70-acre farm were tilled; the Bechtoldts kept the rest in timber and pasture.
